Photoshop Q&A

with Dave Cross

Q: How do you add an arrowhead to a line? A: It’s possible, but only if you use the Line tool (nested under the Rectangle tool in the Toolbar). The arrowhead can’t be added once the line has been drawn, so you must turn on the arrowhead function before dragging with the Line tool. In the Options Bar for the Line tool, click on the gear icon, and you’ll see the Arrowheads settings. Turn on the appropriate checkboxes and experiment with the settings for Width, Length, and Concavity—remembering that the settings will only take affect on the next line you draw, so be prepared to draw a line,...

Q: Is there any way to change the size of the brush without mousing to the Options Bar for the Brushes or Brush Settings panels? A: There are a couple of options for changing the brush size without going to the Options Bar. First, you can use a one-key shortcut: press the Right Bracket key () to decrease the brush size. You’ll have to repeatedly press those keys to continue to increase or decrease the brush size. The other option is a more visual approach using something called the HUD (Heads-up Display). Hold down Control–Option (PC: Ctrl-Alt-Right-click) and drag to the right to inc...

The Channels panel in Photoshop: It’s always there, sitting in the background, ready for us to use, but what exactly are channels, and what can we do with them? This article will attempt to shed some light on channels and their role in Photoshop. Stop the Destruction

with Dave Cross

If you’ve been around the Photoshop world for even a short time, it’s likely that you’ve heard the term “nondestructive,” as in “nondestructive workflow” or “working nondestructively.” In principle, this means to do things in a way where the result isn’t permanent (a.k.a. destructive) and can be edited later in various ways. Some people tell me that they never change their minds, and that’s why they don’t worry about using these methods, while others ask why they should bother working this way. There are some very important reasons to consider using nondestructive techniques, well beyond...
